On this particular subject Mr. Gossett was
somewhat sensitive, as men are who have doubts
in their own minds as to their standing. Mr.
Gossett had an idea that money and "prop'ty,"
as he called it, made a gentleman; but it was a
very vague idea, and queer doubts sometimes
pestered him. It was these doubts that made
him "touchy" on this subject.
